CAMERON COOLIDGE RUSSELL
Issapoohkitopii – Crow Rider
NOVEMBER 4, 1984 – DECEMBER 18, 2020
There are those who knock on Heaven’s door, but for Cam, Heaven came knocking on his door on Friday, December 18, 2020 as he peacefully left surrounded by his devoted parents Bruce & Connie, family, loving relatives and friends.
Cam, who was also known by his many friends as Coolidge, was popular by all those who had the opportunity to be with him. His playful grin and sly smile greeted many who then listened to his manner of speaking that drew people closer to his stories and laughter; Cool had many, many friends on both sides of the border.
Born at the Cardston Municipal Hospital, proud parents Bruce and Connie, and older brother Bruce Jr. (Kidd) watched Cam grow into a fun-loving and mature individual. Throughout his life, Cool was seen as a protector by his relatives, especially by the girls on his side of the family. He would gently warn their boyfriends not to ever disrespect his cousins, and they believed him. This virtue continued when Cool had children of his own as he dedicated his life for his sons Jazen, Bruin, Camden, stepson Oakley, his special sister Phoenix Star, nephew Tyrell Kidd, and, great-niece Cambrie. When Cam was a toddler, he would stand in front of the t.v. so that his cousins couldn’t see what was on; his youngest son did the same thing as he would stand in front of the t.v. so his grandparents wouldn’t see what was on.
Cam must have sensed his time with his loved ones was nearing as he already bought his sons and his parents their gifts for Christmas. He also gave away some of his possessions to friends and family members he held close to his heart. He was especially close to his brother Kidd who watched over him with the same passion all older brothers have with their siblings. Together, they would talk about crazy topics. One such conversation was when Cam told his older brother what he would do if he couldn’t make it into Heaven. The Kidd told Cam: ‘Well, I guess it’s Hell for me.’ Cam then told his brother, ‘Bull, I ain’t going to Hell; I’ll ask God if it’s okay for me to keep the Gates of Heaven clean from the outside, but I ain’t going down there. And when family and friends walk by, I’ll talk to them and make sure they recognize me.’
When Cam was in Crow Agency, Mont., he was always surrounded by relatives and friends, including those from the Jefferson and Big Lake Clans, among others. Cam liked being with Clyde, Louie, Raymond, Dave and Ronnie Big Lake. The people there enjoyed his company and good nature. The Kidd said he loved his brother even though they had their occasional differences. Later, Cam apologized to his older brother but the Kidd told him that immediately after their indifferences, that he was already forgiven—brothers don’t hold grudges.
Cam was always busy and these were a few of the workplaces where Cam gained his experiences: Lethbridge Basements, BTAP, Waterton Lakes Bayshore Hotel, Security at “Old Indian Hospital” Apartments, BTEST & Fort McKay Training Pilot Project where he finished with 15 completed Training Tickets; He also acquired from the Lethbridge College Corporate and Workforce Development Certificates for Alcohol, Drugs and Safety Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Back Care, and Canada Safety Consul Defensive Driving Course. In keeping with his work ethics, both Cam and the Kidd had plans where they would raise cattle and horses for their children. When Cam knew his life was closing in, he encouraged his older brother to continue in fulfilling their dream.
The area where Cam grew up will be that much more empty without his presence. He enjoyed golfing and playing in many tournaments, cruising with his boys; and shooting pool in the Lethbridge Pool League where he made even more friends. He colored life everywhere he went and enriched those with the many friendships he nurtured throughout his lifetime.
Cameron Coolidge was especially saddened by the loss of his namesake Calvin Coolidge Jefferson II on December 7, 2020 and auntie mom Sheila on December 8, 2020. They were among the people Cam truly admired.
When he spoke with family and friends during his final moments, he apologized to all those he felt he may have spoken bad words to or was angry with; he wanted to leave behind in his memory a legacy of goodwill, peace and friendship -- we know he accomplished this.
Cameron Coolidge Russell will be deeply missed by his large family, relatives and friends on both sides of the Blackfoot and Crow territories.
