Bernice Scout
February 13, 1950 – January 22, 2023
Bernice was born in between Leavitt and Mountain View, AB, near Blackmore Hill. On a cold winter night in the back of Bill Scout (Father) Truck, Lily Scout (Mother) gave birth to Bernice Scout. Bernice was raised in Fish Creek area of the Blood Reserve. She was raised with her siblings Willy, Yvonne, Hugh, Florence, Lucille, Vernon, and Edwin (passed away very young). When Bernice became age to start school, she was taken away from her home by the canadian government to attend residential school. During her time in residential school, she was known to be athletic and the fastest runner in school. A story she would tell that the nuns would line up all the girls in the school and have them race. As a young girl she didn’t know how to race. When the nuns would start the race Bernice would outrun the whole school. When she reached the finish she would continue to run with many nuns chasing her and telling her to stop. It was tough for Bernice dealing with the church and bullies and being away from her family. When she was allowed to go home, she would spend time on the farm with her parents. She became an accomplished rider on a horse. She would be riding with her younger brother Vernon all around Fish Creek area. She would always tell stories about riding, exploring, swimming, around her home. Bernice survived boarding school and attended Cardston High School and stayed with a Mormon couple who adopted her while she was in school. Bernice Graduated from Cardston High School in the Class of 1968. During this time she met the love of her life Leonard Old Shoes. Leonard at the time was a Drummer in a local band. Bernice would watch their rehearsals and performances. They would be a couple soon after. Bernice would join a fastball team with Leonard coaching the team. They would be a force to deal with as Bernice was a solid left handed pitcher. Bernice worked at the Blood Indian Hospital as an orderly. She would be an important part of the staff helping and comforting patients. Leonard and Bernice have built their home during the 70s. Bernice and Leonard would adopt their first child Stacey Pantherbone. They would also take in their nephew and niece Herman Scout, and Glenda (Annie, Mouse) Scout. They would raise and support their daughter, nephew, and niece. Bernice Scout would give birth to her first born Kendon Leonard Scout on October 7, 1979 around 1:40pm on a Sunday. Four years later Bernice, at 5:29 am on July 7, 1983, gave birth to Lanni Anne Beth Scout. Bernice would send their kids school in Cardston. Bernice and Leonard were very active in their children sports. Never missing a game, she would attend every game Lanni would play at Cardston High School as a Cougar. Including the Provincial run in 2001 where Lanni would lead the Cougars deep into the playoffs. Bernice was diagnosed with cancer in 2003. Bernice would beat cancer in the summer of 2004. During these times Bernice would work for Kainai Board of Education as a teacher/substitute teacher at Kainai High School. She would also work at Blood Tribe Social Development as an Administrative Assistant. Bernice became a Grandmother in 1992 with Stacy’s daughter Sharmaine. Her first Grandson Alejandro Emmanuel Scout (Grajeda) in August of 1999. Bernice would have two other granddaughters, Shenacie and Shayleigh Pantherbone. Three more would follow with Keira Lily Chantelle Scout, Katniss Lizzabella Scout, Rivers Leonard Scout. Bernice would say her best birthday present ever was when Katniss was born on the same day as her. Bernice lived a full life on this earth. She was known to be humble, approachable person with many friends she has left behind. Bernice will be sorely missed by her children, Grandchildren, Sisters, Brother, family, and friends. Bernice was a friend, wife, mother, auntie, sister, grandmother, survivor, and will be missed my many.
