He was born on January 4, 1945 at home on the north end of the Blood Reserve to the late Ben and Sarah (Stabsdown-Blue Wings) Scout.
Martin is survived by his loving wife Alma; three daughters: Deborah (Gavin) Anderson, Tricia (Tibbs) Spear Chief and Karen Shade; one son Sean (Tracey) Scout; grandchildren: Tatjana, Rory, Jayden, Ravyn, Logan, Sage, Dustin, Colton, Kesse, Mataya, Lennox, Shaquila, McKenley and Lewis; great grandchildren: Aarionne, Cassidy and Draytin; brothers: Ken (Theresa), Ben Jr. (Audrey), Lavern (Ann) and Charlie; sisters: Rosetta (Jordan) and Roseann (Justin); one uncle Harry; aunts: Sophie Scout, Isabel, Leona, Nora, Evelyn, Lena and Myrna Stabsdown and numerous nieces and nephews.
Martin spent his early years at the north end of the Blood Reserve with his parents, siblings and great-grandparents, Blue Wings and Only Woman. Blue Wings strongly influenced him in his traditional values and taught him many skills such as hunting, fishing, trapping, and horsemanship. In his early years, he also competed in the sport of boxing and won a championship.
Martin met and later married the love of his life, Alma Spear Chief, on June 23, 1967. They lived on the Blood Reserve, later moved to Calgary, Lethbridge and Saskatchewan where Alma pursued her education as an R.N. During this time, they raised their children and later moved back to their homestead at the Fish Creek area where he farmed and ranched until his passing. He enjoyed camping, boating, hunting, playing baseball and fishing with his children and grandchildren. Martin also enjoyed listening to Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Johnny Horton and especially liked “Every Breath You Take” by The Police. Martin was very meticulous, prim and proper, and was a no-nonsense person. He was especially conscious of his appearance which he took great pride in. He was very politically-minded and advocated for aboriginal rights. Martin was also affectionately called his childhood name “…..” (Curly Hair) by his parents.
At an early age, Martin attended the St. Mary’s Residential School on the Blood Reserve, then later attended the Henderson College of Business and received his Accounting Diploma. He also attended the Westerra Institute of Technology in Stoney Plain, Edmonton and received his certificate in Gas Distribution Technician, then attended Lethbridge Community College where he received his certificate in Personal Care Aide.
Martin was employed at various places such as the Lethbridge Friendship Centre as an outreach worker, SRI Housing, Atco Gas, Shell Plant, Waterton Dam and various construction sites, including roofing, throughout Calgary South during his lifetime.
