LEON SELLERS passed away Monday August 7, 2017 in Raymond, AB following a valiant battle with cancer. He was 77. He leaves behind his daughter and son-in-law, Heather and Robert Schmitke; his grand-daughters and partners, Karlee Schmitke and Brad Guzzi, and Michaela and Regan Evanson; and a great-grandson, Sawyer Evanson. He leaves behind many other extended family members that he loved and that loved him dearly.
Leon was born in Madison, Illinois on April 24, 1940 to Stella and Frank Sellers. He spent his youth in Madison. As a young adult he joined the US Air Force. It was there that he found the love of his life, Gloria O’dell. They married on November 2, 1960. They remained together until her death in December 2014.
Leon became a father in 1969 when Heather was born. Life changed for the Sellers family. Leon and Heather spent many afternoons in auto parts stores, and in the garage by their house. He taught her how to bleed brakes at a very young age, as well as how to get Mom’s car started by fiddling under the hood. He was a caring, loving and protective father throughout his life.
In 1980, the Sellers family moved from Madison, IL to Cardston, AB. Leon operated a couple of different automotive services and successfully apprenticed many young mechanics.
In the mid-1990’s Leon became a grandfather to Michaela (1994) and Karlee (1995). This role he took very seriously. He was there right from their births and would have given them anything that they asked for. He enjoyed the time he spent with his grand daughters while they grew up and tried to see them regularly through their young adulthood.
In December 2017, Leon was blessed with a great-grandson, Sawyer Evanson. He made a special effort to be in Alberta when Sawyer was born. Leon especially enjoyed watching Sawyer grow in this first few months of his life. He beamed when Sawyer was around and spent much time looking at his pictures while in hospital.
Leon was diagnosed with brain cancer in late-February. Given the location, it wasn’t treatable with traditional cancer treatments. He spent the remainder of his life in hospital, in Calgary, Cardston and eventually in Raymond Long Term Care. Through it all, he kept his sense of humour and never ever complained or questioned ‘why me?’ He kept a brave face and a wonderful attitude for his family and his care givers.
While in hospital, Leon had many family members and friends come and visit. He really appreciated those that came, even when it was difficult.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ladies Auxillary-Raymond Health Centre, send to Heather Schmitke RR 1 Box 4 Site 4 Cardston, AB T0K 0K0 and Heather will get the donations to the hospital. The intent of the donations is to provide the long-term care residents with a wheel chair bicycle and any other recreational items needed to add to their quality of life.
