It is with tender hearts we announce the passing of our sweet father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
Allan Fredrick Smith passed peacefully from our embrace into his sweetheart’s on January 13, 2025. He is the beloved husband of 62 years to the late Gay Ladonne Smith, and is survived by their children Sheryl Gibb (Dennis), Jack Smith (Jackie), Scott Smith (Anne Marie), Dave Smith (April), Karen Smith (Murray Valyear), and Dianne Smith (Stan Sirko). His legacy also includes eighteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren, with two more on the way. He is also survived by his two younger sisters, Ona Bilan and Gweneth Smith.
Allan is predeceased by his father, Mathew Benjamin Smith; his mother, Lydia Doris Smith; his five brothers Lawrence, Robert, William, Cyril, and Daryl; and his most recent great-grandbaby, Lainey Lynn Hall.
Dad was born in Ottawa, Ontario, on April 21, 1932. He was the third of eight children. While he was a young boy his family moved to Medicine Hat. After he finished Grade Eight he began his painting apprenticeship at which he would work hard for over fifty-five years. During that time he moved to Calgary and met his sweetheart, Gay. They settled in the community of Wildwood to raise their family of six. Dad dedicated his life to serving family, community, and church. He exemplified generosity and devotion which inspired and touched the lives of countless others.
Shortly after retiring and relocating to Cardston, Mom suffered a massive stroke and Dad became her caregiver, a role that was unfamiliar to him. Dad did his very best at learning to cook, do laundry, grocery shop, care for Mom, and even clean the house.
Over his lifetime Dad derived great joy camping, coaching hockey, scouting, gardening, and helping those in need. His most cherished gift in life was spending time with his family. Dad was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities, wherever and whenever he was needed.
The Funeral Service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (South Hill Chapel, 950 Main Street Cardston) on Saturday, January 25 at 11:00 am. Friends may meet the family from 10:00 – 10:45 am prior to the service. Interment to follow in the Cardston Cemetery.
