It is with tender hearts we announce the passing of our sweet and beautiful wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
Gay Ladonne Smith (née Gibb) passed peacefully from our embrace into her mother’s on Mother’s Day, May 12th in Cardston; she had just celebrated her 87th birthday.
Gay is survived by her husband of 62 years, Allan Smith, and her children Sheryl Gibb (Dennis), Jack Smith (Jackie), Scott Smith (Anne Marie), Dave Smith (April), Karen Smith (Murray Valyear), and Dianne Smith (Stan Sirko). Her legacy also includes eighteen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
She is predeceased by her father, Henry Simmons Gibb; her mother, Nella May Palmer; her sister, Marlene Hamilton; her brother, Steven Kordel Gibb; and her most recent great grand baby, Lainey Lynn Hall.
Gay was born in Raymond, Alberta on April 22, 1937. She grew up helping her parents on their farm in Rosemary, Alberta. After high school she moved to Calgary to attend secretary’s school. While there, she met her sweetheart, Allan Smith, and they settled in the community of Wildwood to raise their family of six. Gay selflessly dedicated her life to loving, caring for, and serving her family, community, and church. Her shining example of generosity and kindness inspired and touched the lives of countless others.
Shortly after retiring and relocating to Cardston with Al, Gay suffered a massive stroke and was not expected to live. Gay’s family was gifted an extraordinary miracle; seventeen additional years filled with her light, love, and grace.
Over her lifetime, Gay delighted in singing, reading, writing and beating her children at Scrabble. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family indoors and out. Gay was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities; wherever and whenever she was needed.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Cardston at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Temple Street Chapel (355 3 St W) on Saturday, May 18th, 2024 at 11:00 am. Friends are invited to meet the family from 10:00-10:45 am prior to the service. Interment to follow at Cardston Cemetery.
