June 21, 1990 - July 3, 2024
Guy Jordan Sweetgrass “Saiap’pikoan” Grandson of Catherine and the Late Clifford Sweetgrass, passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 3, 2024 at his home in Magrath, AB.
Guy was born to his proud parents Tracey Garcia & Rocky Quesnelle on June 21, 1990 in Magrath, AB. He became the first boy in the Sweetgrass House and Clifford was ecstatic to finally have a “son”. At 6 months old, Guy was taken in by his grandparents, Clifford and Catherine Sweetgrass to be raised as their own. He was very close to all of his Aunties who were more like Sisters and Moms.
Guy had a very special relationship with his Great Grandma Irene McHugh who also gave him his Indian name. He spent a lot of time with her growing up and would often get off the bus at her house and talk her ear off, sometimes spending the night with her. He learned a lot from her and took very good care of her. Grandma Irene always said that Guy had a “Heart of Gold”.
Guy also had a very special bond with his Grandma Catherine Sweetgrass whom he spoke to every day. Being more like a mother, she was the one person who could strike fear in him which was no easy feat. She will miss him and his daily phone calls terribly.
Being the first boy in the family, he was spoiled by everyone but taught to be polite and respectful, especially to elders. Guy was an inquisitive child who could talk your ears off and always had questions to keep the conversation going.
Growing up at the Sweetgrass House, Guy got into a lot of mischief with his sister Kaitlyn and cousin Ty McHugh. He also learned a lot from his grandpa Clifford and made sure to pass that knowledge on to his younger cousins whom he took as his nieces and nephews.
Guy started his schooling in Magrath Elementary School in Grade 1 where he met his lifelong best friend and “Blood Brother” Kris Ramberg. Guy enjoyed bringing his school friends out to the house to celebrate birthdays with paintball and exploring around the house. His bus driver was Kelvin Fox all throughout his school years and they remained good friends who always had lots to catch up on.
His big personality, kindness and general curiosity made him a friend to so many people, too many to name. He could make genuine friends anywhere with anyone and always made them feel like they had been friends for a long time.
He went to visit his mom Tracey(Troy) and sister Kaitlyn in Oregon and ended up enjoying it so much, he lived there for a time. Again, he made numerous new friends whom he kept in close contact with. He later moved back and lived with his Auntie Brenda Sweetgrass for a time until he was able to find his own place in Magrath. Guy knew he always had a home with Brenda and while living with Brenda, Guy became very good friends with her neighbour, Jan Anderson who became a confidante to guy who always had her door open for him to talk.
While going to school and later living in Magrath, Guy made many friends. In addition to Kris Ramberg, among them were Gordy McDonald, Kolby McDonald, Mike Whitehead, Logan Millward, Steven Reyes and many many others too numerous to name.
Guy is survived by his maternal grandmother Catherine Sweetgrass, mother Tracey and stepfather Troy, his brother Lane and cousin Ty whom he took as his brother, his aunties Stacey (Robert), Carmen, Charlotte, Corrine and Brenda. Paternal grandmother Memory Quesnelle; Aunts Carmen Blackwater, Leona and Mariah, Uncles; Lloyd (Karen) McHugh, Peter (Stella), Francis, Adair (Heather), Alan (Miranda) and Murray Eagle Plume. Guy also has many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews too numerous to name.
Predeceased by his Grandpa Clifford Sweetgrass, father Rocky Quesnelle, brothers Dylan, Rocky II and Chance. Sisters Kaitlyn and Gracie. Niece Haylee. Paternal Grandfather Horace Arnold Quesnelle. Grandmother Norma Dumont, Great Grandparents Irene and Leo McHugh, John and Mary Sweetgrass. Uncles Andy Quesnelle and Chance Quesnelle.
