Diane Patricia Twigg ‘Niitkotsipitaakii’
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and niece (Niitkotsipitaakii), Mrs. Diana Patricia Twigg (Big Throat), beloved wife of the late Christopher Twigg Sr., peacefully in the early hours of Tuesday, March 17, 2006, at Cardston Hospital at the age of 75 years old, surrounded by loved ones.
Mom will be lovingly remembered by her children: Christopher Twigg Jr. (Leeanna), Carey (Tashina), Colin, and Trisha Twigg. Also Nathan Big Throat, Simone Big Throat, Sonya Big Throat, Eulalia (Emma) Big Throat, the late Charly and Tanya Big Throat, Justin and Myron (Ronnie) Grier, Corey and Paul Goodstriker. Her siblings: Henry Big Throat, Linda (Daryl) Three Persons, Nora (Roy) Scout, Betty (Quinn) Big Throat, Pam, Wanda and Doris Big Throat; also Delia Healy and Ron (Theresa) Healy. Aunties: Veronica (Ray) Brewer and Christine Good Dagger.
Diana was born on May 23, 1950, to Horace and Elizabeth Naatoissammyakii Big Throat (Healy) at the Indian Hospital in Cardston, Alberta. She received her early education at the day
school in Stand Off and at the St. Mary’s Residential School on the Blood Reserve, where she fell in love with the love of her life, Christopher Twigg Sr.
In Grade 9, Mom left school to help raise her siblings. Diana grew up in Lower Stand Off with many cousins. She spent summers in Fox Coulee on the family land. At an early age, Mom married the love of her life in 1966, Christopher Twigg Sr. Together they welcomed four boys and two girls.
In 1975, they built their home in Old Agency. Christopher was a bus owner and driver, and Mom worked in Fort Macleod nursing home. Early in their life, Diana lost her love, Christopher. After
the devastation, Mom devoted herself to taking care of her family, raising each generation of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Nicknamed “Lady Diana” because of the warmth she made everyone feel and the close bond she had with all. Along with raising her big family, her heart was in being a homemaker. Lady always had her door open, especially to the boys and their many friends.
Some of her proudest moments were her children and their accomplishments. Mom enjoyed cooking and made sure everybody was fed. Like Granny, Mom was a spectacular seamstress. She made wonderful clothes and dresses for the family, often getting requests from extended family. Mom also knew mechanic skills she had learned from her late husband and dad.
“Lady” was raised as a strong Catholic and made sure her children were also. Our “Lady” will be missed by all. Her warmth will always be the home of our hearts.
Mom was predeceased by her husband, Christopher Twigg Sr.; Nephews and Nieces: Grant and Lance Wolf Child, Tanya Big Throat, Charly and Russell Big Throat, Andrew “Buffy” Twigg, Lorenzo Big Throat, Yari Big Throat; Maternal Aunts & Uncles: Daisy and Phillip Aberdeen, Clara and Francis Russell, Flora and Henry Day Rider; Paternal Aunts & Uncles: Godparents: Stanley and Theresa Black Water, Max and Annabelle Big Throat, Albertine and Wayne Plume, Pauline and George Healy, Evelyn and Eugene Twigg, Celina and Jim Twigg, Donalda Redcrow Big Throat; Her parents, Horace and Elizabeth Big Throat (Healy); Paternal grandparents, Henry and Clara Big Throat (Day Rider); Maternal grandparents, Jim and Eulalia Healy (Melting Tallow); Brothers: Eugene (Tiny) and Melvin Big Throat, Terry Day Rider, Dexter Rider, and sister Catherine Rider; Her Children: Carl George Twigg, Loriann and Patrick Eagle Child; Great-Grandchildren: Tavaiyah Medicine Crane, Taylin “Jay” Twigg; Grandsons: Shay and Tyler Twigg.
The family apologizes for any names missed, as Mom came from a big family.
