
It is with great sadness, deep sorrow, and much love, that we the family, announce the passing of a beloved Mother, Daughter, Sister, Aunty and Great aunty. ‘Sa’pbapbistaats’akii (Sacred Staff Woman/Lady) Tricia Jodi Wells, passed away peacefully at the Rocky View General Hospital (Mohkinstsis, AB) on Thursday, June 22, 2023, at the tender age of 48 years old. ‘Sa’pbapbistaats’akii’ was born on December 19th, 1974, in Cardston, AB
She leaves to mourn her loving daughter Hanna Beebe, Father Keith (Momma Karen) Chiefmoon, sisters Carolyn (Shawn) Wells, Dana (Dallas) Wells-Durocher, Tammy (Jamie) Chiefmoon, Tara Russell, Wadine Badine. Brothers Russell (Candice) Wells, Darwin (Marie) Chiefmoon, Sean (Kelly) Chiefmoon, Darcy and David Russell, and her adopted parents Woody and Clarice Beebe. She was predeceased by her mother Anna Wells, grandparents Jim and Molly Wells, Dan and Philomena Chiefmoon, brothers Raymond Eagle Bear, and Jamie Bryce Wells, Nephews Reese and Baby Jordan Wells-Bastien, and Niece Jenna Wells-Bastien.
‘Sa’pbapbistaats’akii’ Tricia Jodi Wells attended Standoff Elementary School, Cardston Elementary, Hamilton Junior High, Kicking Horse Job Corps (Ronan, MT, USA) and Clearfield Job Corps (Utah, USA), where Jodi was training to be a Heavy Equipment operator.
After she came back from the United States, ‘Sa’pbapbistaats’akii’ furthered her education at the Red Crow Community College, Training Inc. and Lethbridge Community College where she completed programs in Upgrading, Certificate in Travel & Tourism and transferred to LCC to attain her Diploma in Travel & Tourism. In celebration of completion of her Certificate in Travel & Tourism, her and her classmates went on a Mexican Cruise.
‘Sa’pbapbistaats’akii’ Tricia Jodi, was very athletic in her younger years to her young adult life, she was a long-distance runner and she qualified to run with team Alberta for NAIG at the age of 12 years old. She also played basketball, volleyball, and Track n Field. She liked to keep active in all types of physical activity which included dancing at her dads piercing Sundance down in Chiefmoon Valley.
Tricia Jodi was a very spiritual person and believed in the traditional way of life and would sometimes go fast with the Sundancer’s. She also believed in Catholicism and made her Cursillo in July 1998, and their theme song was ‘Jesus on my mind’, she wore rosaries and would carry a bible.
In her social outings, she really enjoyed dancing music and would sometimes dance on the speakers or anywhere she can bust a move. She even danced jingle with her sister Dana at Gladstone Hall when they had one of their traditional pow wows, but it was just a spur of the moment decision to get out on the pow wow dance floor. Jodi loved going to pow wows and even went as far as California for a pow wow with her pow wow friend.
‘Sa’pbapbistaats’akii’ Tricia Jodi, was a very loving person, she made friends easily and like to joke around and found humour in all situations. She cared about people who were vulnerable, who didn’t have a voice, and people who were hurt in their lives. She tried to make friends with everyone she met, which sometimes turned into awkward situations.
When Jodi became a mother, she tried her best to provide the best for her ‘Hannabeans or Hannu’ as she would call her babygirl Hanna. She loved her daughter very much and always ensured that she had the best care for her. Tricia Jodi loved her nephews and nieces as they were her own children, and her face would light up when she seen them.
‘Sa’pbapbistaats’akii’ Tricia Jodi, was a hard worker and excelled in her jobs, she started working at a young age and was employed at Stans Farm sales as a gas jockey, she had summer jobs with YWCA, FCSS and Social Development, and her last place of employment was at the Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump where she made many lifelong friends and contributed to the community and helped people in need.
In the last decade of her life, her life changed significantly. She made many friends with the Moses Lake people, and eventually relocated to the Lethbridge and Calgary inner city community. She resided at the Steppingstone manor where they provided Alternative Permanent Supportive Housing. Steppingstone facilitated connections and opportunities that promoted personal development and inclusive communities for adults experiencing mental health and/or addictions issues.
‘Sa’pbapbistaats’akii’ Tricia Jodi Wells, comes from a huge family of the Wells and Chiefmoons, with many relatives throughout Blackfoot Confederacy.
Steppingstone Manor would also like to remember ‘Sa’pbapbistaats’akii’ Tricia Jodi Wells by having a ‘Celebration of life’ to honor her, on Saturday July 1st, 2023, between 12noon to 3pm, at 222 15th Avenue SW. Calgary, AB.
The family would like to thank Foothills Hospital, Rocky View Hospital and Steppingstone Manor who cared for her.
A Wake Service will be held at Senator Gladstone Hall, Blood Reserve on Wednesday, June 28, 2023 from 7:00 - 11:00 pm. The Funeral Service will be held at St Mary’s Catholic Church, Blood Reserve on Thursday, June 29, 2023 at 11:00 am. Interment to take place at Blood Band Cemetery.
