Alphonse Curtis White Man Left - I’kinayoh’kotok (Gentle Rock)
February 10, 1967 – June 1, 2022
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dear dad, grandpa, brother, uncle and cousin on Wednesday June 1, 2022 in Lethbridge, AB; at the age of 55 years.
Curtis was born to the late Alphonse and Teresa White Man Left on February 10, 1967; at the Blood Indian Hospital. He is survived by his son; Kyle (Stephanie), his grandchildren; Theodore and Sullivan, sister; Noreen Wolf Child, brothers; Daniel (Bobbi), Ricky (Jeraldine), and Melvin White Man Left, and Auntie; Sandy Many Chief. Curtis had numerous nephews and nieces.
Curtis received his education at the St. Mary’s School and for his junior years, he attended school in Fort Macleod. He later went on to attend the Bow Valley College for upgrading. Curtis enjoyed playing basketball with the St. Mary’s Eagles, and because of his height and athleticism, he was a very good basketball player. Curtis had a nickname, everyone knew him as “King Curtis” not sure who started calling him that but he had got the name when he was in school, and probably due to his stature and height.
Curtis’s greatest accomplishment was when his son, Kyle Across The Mountain. He was very excited when Kyle was born and adored his role as a father. When Kyle was young, Curtis had moved to Vancouver and that’s where he stayed for a number of years enjoying the adventures and life around the Island. Curtis would take Kyle to Vancouver, so he could see and visit the Island; they both would enjoy sightseeing and did a lot of swimming while there. Curtis had always lived on his own whether it be in Calgary or Vancouver, and was a person that was very resourceful and humble. Curtis had a lot of friends both native and non-native and was good to everyone.
Curtis was an amateur writer and always loved writing stories; he was very good at it and had written two short story (drafts), he didn’t take it as serious, but if he did, he could have tried to get them published. Curtis was very close to all of his family members and grew up with many of his extended family. He considered many individuals that he was close to and refer to them as his brothers and sisters. Family was always important to him. When Curtis was a baby he got sick, and blessings was bestowed on him by the old man “Napi” and while growing up his uncle the late Cecil Many Chief made a pledge on his behalf, this is one of the reasons he lived as long as he did.
Curtis loved listening to music, especially his CD’s, he always had his music on and was listening to all of his “oldies “all day long. He was such a generous person. He helped all of his nieces and nephews with anything that he had, even at moment’s notice and would often gift them with money and junk food. Curtis helped everyone that came to his mom Teresa’s home, and would greet them with a big smile and a funny joke. He loved being around his family. Curtis helped his mom Teresa, raise his nephews and nieces and especially his great nephew TJ. Curtis and TJ had a special bond, TJ referred to Curtis as his “dad”. When his mom Teresa would go to town, Curtis would sometimes stay behind and watch over the kids. We could always count on him to be there to help.
Curtis was predeceased by his parents; Alphonse and Teresa, grandparents; (maternal) John and Mary Many Chief, and (paternal) Joe and Mary White Man Left, brother-in-law; Edmund Wolf Child, Nieces and Nephews; Lacey Atwood, Kelsey Wolf Child, Mary Ann, Robbie and Tim White Man Left, and Vanessa Spear Chief.
Curtis will be sadly missed for his humour, his generosity, and his gentle and caring nature. Curtis and mom were so close and now they are reunited.
Curtis comes from a large extended family. Her extended families include; the Striped Wolfs, First Chargers, Eagle Plumes, First Riders, Eagle Bears, and Low Horns, White Man Lefts, Shoutings, Bare Shin Bones. (The family apologizes for any names that were missed)
The Wake Service will be at White Calf Hall, Stand Off on Friday June, 10, 2022 from 7:00 - 11:00 pm. The Funeral Service will be held at White Calf Hall, Stand Off on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at 11:00 am. Interment to follow at Blood Band Cemetery.
