Bernard White Man Left Jr. better known as Billy-Joe. He was given the name Billy-Joe after his grandfathers Billy Eagle bear and Joe sun. At the time in both families, Eagle Bears’ and White Man Lefts’ many jrs came to be, so Bernard being the unique individual he was, he then became better known as Billy-joe.
He was an inquisitive child, a daredevil in all aspects. Billy-Joe was Moms Evel Knievel child who did death defying acts. His braveness and eagerness to learn and try new things had him wanting to excel in many sports. He became an excellent goalie, to playing football, baseball and even steer riding. Due to his rodeo injuries, his rodeo career was cut short.
Our traditional values and beliefs were instilled in him at a young age by his grandparents and parents. Helping mom and dad at sweats to growing up at the Sundance. Supporting his parents, brothers, sisters and children, and all the societies they were involved in.
At the age of two, his big brother Alvin Medicine Crane passed down his outfit to him. This is where his desire to enter the pow-wow world started. He explored different dancing styles, such as grass and traditional. In the end, his passion was traditional. He then met his lifelong friend who became his brother Arnold Mountain horse. Who introduced him to pow-wow singing. Thus brought them on many adventures travelling the powwow trail. Bringing them all over the USA and Canadian country. After his debut with Moccasin Flat singers, he then went into singing with Da Bad Boyz that brought him to San Diego, Schemitzun as host drum for two years in a row.
Billy-Joe attended Standoff kindergarten school at the age of four years along with sister Cheryl. Only to be in school for a few weeks before they were both kicked out. As Billy-Joe told mom and dad “those kids should’ve never hit me.” My sister beat them up. He then went onto attend Cardston elementary from 1980 to 1981. He then transferred to Fort McLeod school up until grade 7 at F.P. Walsh. And Went onto McGrath school up to grade 9 then came back to Kainai high school. He also attended Red Crow College upgrading. His most recent was the Niitsitapi Agriculture Diploma Program with Red Crow College on the Blood Reserve.
He was employed at F.C.S.S. with his supervisor being Janita Fox. He also worked alongside dad Bernard Sr. in agriculture, planting the community garden. After his fathers untimely passing, he left the position not long after and there his parenting journey began. He mostly raised his children, Kaitlyn and Bernard III, who is affectionately known as Baby Joe. He took great pride in being the big brother by tutoring, his younger siblings and their education, to teaching them pow-wow dancing to two stepping. He was always there to support his family in whatever they needed. He had his own special relationship with each of his siblings.
Billy Joe supported and encouraged younger siblings Jim Garrett, and Mush in their spiritual journeys with our sacred societies. He was very proud when his children started their own spiritual journeys supporting and showing up to watch them dance at the Sundance. Joe was always there when his brothers and sisters needed him. Billy-Joe loved his children and grandchildren so much. He was always there to help them with whatever they needed. He always encouraged his children and family in whatever endeavours they choose. Always making sure they are safe as he calls upon his mom brother Garrett and sister Michelle (Mush). He loved and missed his wife Elana that he chose to join her, along with his dad Bernard Sr. and baby brother Jim. He made sure his boss Owen is in safe the arms of his family. He is loved by so many and will be missed by all who had the blessing of knowing our beloved brother, father and son.
He will be especially missed by his Mom, Sisters Michelle and Cheryl, brother Garrett, his children Dj, Katelyn, Bernard III, Owen and Liam grandchildren Peyton, Spencer and King. Along with all his nieces and nephews. Although he is gone, we have a piece of him in each of his children.
