It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Catherine Wolf Child; our dear sister, aunt, cousin and mother (to her baby Colin), on Tuesday, January 11, 2022 in Standoff, Alberta; at the age of 73 years.
Catherine will be sadly missed by her dear sister; Stella, Nieces; Marcy, Elita, Talyssa, Cashton, and Baby Jazz, Nephews; Rylan, Jon (Candace), Leon (Tara), Neal (Veronica). She is survived by her Sisters; Geraldine (Richard), Josephine, Theresa (Alfie), Joyce (Lambert), Annette (Myron), Edna (Marna), Brenda, Brothers; Gilbert (Shirley), Daniel (Bettina), Sister-In-Law; Noreen, Special Sisters; Elizabeth and Marilyn, Auntie; Lena Chief Calf, and Cousin/Best Friend; Levina. Catherine comes from a large immediate and extended family.
Catherine attended Standoff Elementary School, up to the sixth grade; she also attended the St. Mary’s Day School for one-year due to difficult situations in school. Catherine’s employment included working with the Blood Tribe Police Department as a cook. She was also a custodian/janitor with the Standoff Elementary School, and a foster parent whom had cared for many children. She created lasting bonds with each of the children she had taken in.
Her favorite hobbies and interests included beading, designing and making dancing regalia for her niece; Marcy. She specifically enjoyed making earrings and necklaces, she was very creative and neat in her designs, and all the designs were made from her being able to picture them done in her mind. Her passion for beading came from her teacher Doris whom had shown her to bead and shared with her all her tips. Catherine and Adrian looked forward in setting up their booth at the Calgary Stampede and displayed their many artistic creations for all to see. They both would have items purchased from individuals all over the world. Another one of Catherine’s past times was being an avid supporter of her nieces and nephews native traditional dancing, she attended many pow wow’s throughout Alberta and the United States with her travelling partners - Adrian, Betty, Marcy, Terrance, Michelle and TJ.
Catherine’s other hobby included making candy apples and was taught by the late Loretta Doore. Catherine was the first one to make candy apples within the Standoff community, and was well known for making them. Catherine would often say they were “one of a kind”. She would never give up her recipe, family members tried to get her to share but she claims it was in a vault and never did say. If you stopped in for a visit there was a possibility that you might be lucky and leave with one of her famous candy apples.
Catherine was a very strong individual, and her family knew her to be a one of a kind “superwoman”. She was an avid carpenter, landscaper, plumber and had unique ways of taking care of the lawn, she planted trees and would take care of all the landscaping around the house, she would be seen making repairs as needed and as she went. Catherine took very good care of her family, she spoiled them by ensuring all the laundry was done and there was always a home cooked meal ready and waiting to be served. Catherine had such a big heart, she helped raise many of her nieces and nephews as her own and would do anything for Colin, Marcy, Rylan, Talyssa and Cashton. During her early years’, Catherine spent a lot of time with her cousins –the late Maggie Eagle Speakers family, mainly with (late) Peggy Eagle Speaker and her boys. Catherine got very close to them and built a strong relationship with them. Her best friend and “Partner in crime” was Levina, they always had a lot of fun together. Catherine had a great sense of humor and would be seen joking around with her nephews, she never backed down from them even when they would tease her back. She had the tendency to joke in a colored manner that would make you laugh.
Due to her illness, she was unable to continue with her beadwork and making candy apples but did however maintain a special relationship with Adrian and his family, she adopted Betty as one of her sisters and would often ask for them. Catherine had such a strong faith in religion and because of this, it was felt that her life was extended for 8 years more after suffering a stroke. A special thanks to Eugene Black Water and son Eugene JR for always watching out for our dear Catherine. She also developed a special relationship with “Leezy” Leon JR Heavy Runner as he stepped in to be one of her caregivers, andenjoyed watching “Young and the Restless” with her.
A special acknowledgment goes out to Dr. Shey Eagle Bear, nurses; Jamie, Miranda and Chelsea for all the special care that they provided for her as well as to Marcy and Rylan for her everyday care. Thank you to you all.
Catherine was predeceased by her son; Colin, Parents; Sam and Elizabeth, Amy, and Jack, Siblings; Bella, Samuel, Edmund, Martin, Martha, Adrian, Leonard, and Cindy. Nephews; Marvin, Kevin, Jason, Kerry, Robbie, Bradley and Kelsey, Nieces; Sharon, Rochelle, and Donna. Catherine’s extended families include; Lena Chief Calf and Family, Late Maggie Eagle Speaker family, Wolf Child families, Black Faces, Black Forehead families, late Ruby Doore and family, Kenneth Doore Family from Siksika, Louise English Family from Piikani, Shot Both Sides, Knifes, and the late Isabelle Spear Chief’s family. (The family apologies for any names that were missed)
A Wake Service will be held at the Tanner Senior Centre, Cardston on Monday, January 17 from 6:00 - 11:00 pm. The Funeral Mass will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Blood Reserve on Tuesday, January 18 at 11:00 am with interment to follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Stand Off.
