Odile Day Chief “Saahsaakii” Sarcee Woman
December 20, 1938 – November 27, 2022
It is with immense sadness and heartache that we announce the passing of the matriarch of our family, Odile, whom passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at the Cardston Hospital; Cardston, AB. We were blessed beyond measure that we had her in our lives for almost 84 years.
She was predeceased by her sons; Delbert Young Pine, Edmund Wolf Child, William Many Bears Jr., John Bruised Head, and Shamrock Day Chief; Grandson; Kelsey Wolf Child; Francis Small Eyes. Her parents Joe and May Young Pine. And mother Fanny White Quills, whom Grandpa remarried later on in life. From this union their baby brother Sidney was born. Siblings; Jim (Margaret) Young Pine, Madeline (Tom) Oka, Raymond (Kathleen) Young Pine, Irene (Luke) Small Eyes, Annie Teresa (Jesse) Three Persons, Mary Rose Young Pine, Jerry Young Pine, and Sidney Young Pine. Odile was the last surviving child of Joe and May’s children and the baby of the bunch. Odile lost her mom at the tender age of four and was raised by her eldest sister Madeline and her husband Tom. Her other siblings included Leita Big Sorrel Horse, Martha Minoose, Evelyn Bird, Alymer Oka, Mary Cardinal, and Mavis Oka-Mitchell. Her mother in law, Jane Day Chief.
Mom was born at the Blood Indian Hospital and was raised in the Bull Horn area. She came from the Many Children Clan, also known as Aakaipokaiks. Odile attended the St. Mary’s Indian Residential School for 16 years. In the summer she went home to her dad Joe’s ranch. She and her siblings roamed, played, and rode horses in the Bull Horn Coulees.
Later in life, mom married Sam Day Chief, despite their separation they remained friends. Sam still considered mom as his wife right up until her passing and their love remained. Together they raised their kipitaipokaa Jennifer. Mom always talked about when they would race horses, her horse, Lem High, having numerous wins; probably why she loved the movie ‘Secretariat’.
Mom took pride in her work ethic as she was a skilled worker. She moved to Calgary where she started her employment as a caregiver and live in nanny. Mom was a awesome nanny for many children, off the reserve and to many families here on the reserve. Early in her life she lived in many places where she worked along side her family in Yakama and Wenatchee Washington, Big Fork Montana, and Calgary, Alberta. Mom and her baby girl Frances moved back to Calgary where she continued to worked. She later came home to work for the Cardston Clinic, along side her best friend Alvine Beebe, which was located at the BTA. And then later worked for a
Group Home, as a Supervisor. Other employment included BT Recreation as a custodian, cleaned the old laundry mat; her last occupation was custodian for the Standoff Daycare and Social Services. She worked up until her retirement at age 70, after this she took her grandma and great-grandma role on full time.
Mom was very active, always busy tending to her family and making sure they had everything they needed. Mom was her daughter Frances’ biggest supporter, as Frances became a young mom. Mom played a big role in helping to raise her children when Frances went back to school. She took pride in her family, supporting Laura and Brittany with hockey and rodeo. Mom was so happy when her daughter Frances married William, it was the perfect day.
Mom was a very huge supporter of her nephews and was always going to watch them rodeo; she even travelled as far as Reno to show her support. She traveled to Minneapolis for the Indigenous Games to watch her niece Gerri. Supported family members in the society ceremonies, always ensuring they had what that they needed. Mom always had her home open for her nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, raising many of them when she didn’t have much herself. She would always be there for birthday celebrations, graduations, barbeques, and family gatherings. As the last remaining matriarch of Joe and May, she took on the role of mom and grandma for everyone.
Mom was not a materialistic person, so she spoiled her family and ensured they had what they needed. She bought her daughter Noreen a new tipi when an unfortunate event took hers the previous year, and Mom would ensure Noreen and Edmund had new clothes for the four days they danced. Mom helped Frances with her children’s sports activities and trips. She took Jennifer on numerous trips, one of the most memorable was to Europe.
She enjoyed traveling and was a well traveled little lady. Mom travelled with her family on many adventures and camping trips in Canada and the United States. Her last big trip was with her daughters Frances, Jennifer, Bronwyn, her son William, and grandkids to Disneyland, San Diego, and Las Vegas. On one of her many trips to Las Vegas to watch the PBR finals, she had to get her hair permed on the first day. Mom and Annie were to watch for two days, but opted out of the second day, as it was too hard on their nerves. One grandson saying he was embarrassed, because they kept saying “Yaw, yaw, yaw”, every ride. Her most memorable trip was her pilgrimage that took her to Rome to see the Pope. She also travelled to Hawaii, Mexico, Jerusalem, Fatima, Lourdes, as well as travelling throughout Europe.
She leaves to mourn her children; Noreen Wolf Child, Frances Many Bears, Laura (Aiden) Yellow Feet, Brittany (Doug) Spotted Bull, Darrell (Linda) Three Persons, Wendall (Karen) Three Persons, Sheldon (Corry) Three Persons, Roy Three Persons, Donna Mae Small Eyes, Patty (Cyril) Eagle Child, Delroy Oka, Belinda (Rod) Bull Shoe, Barbara (Shawn) Gopher, Matt Bruised Head, Pernell (Marietta) Bruised Head, and Jamie (Rocky) Eagle Bear; Kipitaipokaiks Jennifer Many Bears, and Bronwyn Young Pine; Godchildren; Marlene Big Sorrel Horse, Maurice Minoose, and Loretta Young Pine.
